Whoring Around!

Well, Rick Santorum has taken his (very short) turn in the Evangelical Righteous Right's "He's not Romney" barrel.

But what I find amusing is that it is obvious that a very significant part of the resistance to Romney is because of his Mormonism.

But wait a minute! Santorum is a devout Roman Catholic... you know, the Whore of Babylon!

It was no more than a couple of generations ago ... if that ... that any Catholic politician faced serious disadvantages among the very people who are now preferring Santorum to Romney.

I'd almost count this as progress in religious tolerance, if it wasn't for the fact that it's rooted in deep intolerance for Mormons.

Comments:
Evangelicals (aside from some sticks in the mud) have been gradually cozying up to the conservative end of the RCC since back in my day, ie. the 1970s. It's mostly because they agree about abortion and sexuality in general.

Sure. But it ain't like the Mormons are flaming liberals (witness the Mormons bankrolling the Prop 8 campaign in California).

I just find it amusing that the bygones-be-bygones impulse is so obviously inconsistant.

Isn't that how tolerance seems to progress? Acceptance of one group out of shared intolerance of another?

AFAIC, they are all united in shared misogynism -- which also has a lot to do with the shared homophobia.

There was Kennedy's speech declaring that he would not be a tool of the pope.
Then there was Romney's speech in which he declared that he was not a member of a cult, that he was a good Christian.
Just the other day Santorum declared that Kennedy's speech made him want to vomit. He blamed that speech as the root of all of our nation's problems today.

Mormon beliefs are an order of magnitude weirder than Catholic beliefs. However, I can confidently state that attending a Mormon church service is much less demanding than a Catholic one, especially after a good Saturday night on the town. Catholics have this thing about endless kneeling and repetitive mumblings that just doesn't fit well with a hangover.

That's all you need to know about Santorum to make a rational choice about him.

Mormon beliefs are an order of magnitude weirder than Catholic beliefs.

That's debatable. The Catholics mostly have the advantage of long tradition and widespread cultural influence on their side.

Catholics have this thing about endless kneeling and repetitive mumblings that just doesn't fit well with a hangover.

Tell me about it!
